The first time I ever saw my first piano teacher she was standing and talking to my Aunt Arrie just outside Bullington's Drug Store which was next door to my grandfather's Broadway Cafe in the late spring of 1940.

I did not want to "take piano" for I could already play lots of stuff by ear (using my fingers too, of course). But I remember how nice she was.

Her name was Erma Cargile. She was fresh out of college, very pretty and also very tactful as I learned later. She would say, "Now, I don't want to sound fussy, but you must start practicing more and watching how you practice, and I am not going to play your new pieces for you, because then you don't really look at the music."

Many years have gone by, but she still comes to hear me when I play in Mt. Pleasant. I have a special place for her in my heart. Memories could fill an afternoon.
