 COUNTRY BOY, CITY BOY 
When I was a junior in high school I began to play in the Broadway
Cafe on the east side of the square in the Northeast Texas town of
Mt. Pleasant. I was about twelve at the time and I would play Clair de Lune and murder Malaguena and other classics shamefully and I would hear modest applause out of respect for my grandfather, who owned the restaurant and who also had a Baldwin Piano dealership (hence, the piano in the restaurant so I could play for his lunch time patrons occasionally). Every now and then some old iron ore worker from Daingerfield or a worker from the Talco oil fields would come up and say, "How about givin' us a little boogie woogie?."... I would have bet you even money that I would escape having to play country music until it dawned on me that country music is like the opera of the common people in the culturally romantic countries of Europe.....
